parental vacation plans can become a real cause of contention between divorced
or separated parents. It is imperative that co-parents prepare and plan how the
kids will spend this time. Even when school and holiday custody has been determined,
there are times when a change in jobs or vacation dates can easily be
overlooked. Sometimes a year may present an irregular event such as family
reunions or events that were never anticipated. Sometimes separated parent have
not completely worked out their parenting and visitation plans. We want to
offer some suggestions to help you navigate Summer break, these are time tested
strategies to help you and your family reduce the tension.
Download the dates
- School holidays are hard to keep track of because their dates tend to vary from one year to the next, even from one city to the next. This will significantly affect your schedule if you are not prepared well in advance.
- Check the school calendar as early as possible, and download the dates on your cell phone or tablet so that you get plenty of advance notice for the start and end of summer break.
- If your child has a cell phone, have them put the information on their calendar as well. You can set up email notifications so everyone is on the same page.
- You need to know whether your agreement says that your custody schedule starts after school on Friday or if it starts on the following Sunday.
- Be sure to enter special dates such as shopping for school clothes or annual physicals.
- It is very important that you verify these days with your ex-spouse to avoid confusion or tension.
- If you have concerns about your holiday custody schedule, and you cannot agree together, speak with your family law attorney as soon as possible.
